The 29" height provides greater soil depth and a more comfortable working height. It reduces the need to bend or kneel, helping to limit strain on the back and joints. The deeper soil profile also provides more room for root development and allows you to create a controlled growing medium with improved structure, drainage and nutrient availability. This can be particularly beneficial on poor, compacted or otherwise unsuitable native soils.

If accessibility, comfort and greater growing depth are priorities, the 29" bed is usually the better choice. If you prefer a lower bed that the whole family—including younger gardeners—can easily use, the 15" height is an excellent option.

Yes. Both 15" and 29" Birdies beds provide enough growing depth for most vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, leafy greens, herbs, beans and root vegetables.

Because the beds are open at the bottom, plant roots can continue growing into the soil underneath. The 29" bed does provide a deeper layer of quality garden soil, which can be beneficial for deep-rooted crops or when the existing ground underneath is compacted or poor.

For most gardeners, however, the choice between 15" and 29" is less about what you can grow and more about your preferred gardening height, accessibility and the amount of soil required.

If your current setup is too large, you can easily rebuild it in a smaller compatible configuration using the panels included in your kit. If you later need a larger setup than your kit allows, you’ll need an additional compatible Birdies kit.

Soil volume depends on the dimensions and height you select. Larger and 29" tall beds naturally require more soil.
